Two decades of care & share

Highlights of donations made to Topiwala National Medical College and BYL Nair Hospital by TNMC alumni chapters in India, the UK and the USA.

2020–2021

Relief

COVID-19 relief worth Rs 32 lakh

Alumni and like-minded supporters donated 2,435 PPE kits, 6,450 N95 masks, 750 scrubs, 225 face shields, 100 pulse oximeters, 8,050 ORS packs, 1,000 food packets, post-COVID pulmonary function and sleep apnoea machines, and biochemistry material for COVID testing.

Equipment

Video laryngoscope for Anaesthesia

A top-of-the-line Storz video laryngoscope worth Rs 15.5 lakh was donated to the Anaesthesia department. Five meritorious final MBBS students were felicitated and every first-year student received a TGA white coat.

Equipment

3D laparoscopy for Gynaecology

A 3D laparoscopy camera system worth Rs 33 lakh, the first of its kind in the Gynaecology department of any public hospital, along with medical books worth Rs 1 lakh for the library and an EL probe for Urology.

USA chapter

Dialysis machines from the USA chapter

Four dialysis machines were commissioned in Nephrology courtesy of TGA – USA chapter, alongside paediatric endoscopes, infusion pumps, five scholarships of Rs 40,000 and 120 white coats for first-year students.

Infrastructure

Seminar hall & pathology microscope

A fully equipped 66-seat Medicine Seminar Hall was rededicated, and a trinocular microscope with digital camera was donated to Pathology.

2009–2010

Education

e-Journal library & ECG machine

Six computer stations giving access to top medical journals were commissioned in the TNMC library, and a six-channel ECG machine was donated to Cardiology.

2008

Infrastructure

Renovated hostel & autism centre

TONAMEC – UK funded the renovation of the TNMC hostel at Haji Ali, and the 1982 batch helped set up an autism centre run by the Psychiatry department for children in need.

2006–2007

Education

Classrooms rebuilt for a new era

Renovated anatomy and physiology lecture halls, a 65-seat pharmacology mini auditorium, the Dr I M Mehta Memorial Anatomy Dissection Hall, the Dr K N Dastur Surgical Seminar Room, common rooms, a reading room for RMOs, a ventilator, and computers and projectors for departments.

Students first

Scholarships, white coats & recognition

Every year alumni felicitate meritorious students and teachers, fund scholarships for deserving students, and welcome each new first-year batch with a TGA white coat.

TNMC students now have their own Students’ Area on the global alumni website. Undergraduate, postgraduate and super-specialty students register as associates and automatically become life members when they graduate.
